As drivers- whether we are newbies or have millions of miles of verifiable experience- we REALLY NEED to think about a few things and ask ourselves some very hard questions....
Most all of us are well aware of the sedentary nature of a job as an OTR truck driver. However, not everyone is aware of the gradual long-term detriment to a driver's health if they don't try to take care of their most valuable asset- the ONLY body they will ever be able to live in.
I'm sure many of us have noticed drivers that are excessively overweight and are nearly out of breath after just walking over a few feet. Well, there IS hope for them but it's up to THEM to want to make lifestyle changes. There is NO 'magic pill' that will help them achieve better health- it all revolves around better diet and exercise.
As drivers, let's ask ourselves the following questions:
*"Do I want to retire from trucking at a time of my own choosing or be forced out of the industry by circumstance?"
*"What kind of quality of life do I want to have after I retire?" (This is a big one- I'm sure many of us visualize family outings at the lake or a beach while watching our Grandchildren playing- but the unfortunate reality at that point in their lives is often much different for many.
I'm in my early 40s now and while I have always been a physically active person, I had a little health scare of my own come about several years ago. Thankfully I have worked hard through some lifestyle changes and am in much better health now.
While I run, ride a bike, and pump iron in the gym to stay in shape, I don't expect everyone to go to the extremes that a few of us have done. Even just 30 minutes of brisk walking will do most of us a lot of good.
There's a few Facebook pages that offer a lot of support and encouragement from fellow drivers who are working toward their own fitness goals and/or just enjoy being outdoors. Check out "Truckin' Runners" as well as "Ride and Roll: Cycling on the Road" to learn more.
Regardless of what we do, LET'S GET OUT THERE!
