If we want to end the debate and solve some problems, here is a solution from the think tank.
STUDY WHAT? You want to solve problems with humans, you need to understand human problems as they face them everyday.
This message is to Anthony Foxx, every trucking company, and every single trucker in America & Canada. Regarding the HOS and the current state of trucking.
1) Pay drivers an above average wage. Across the board. Pay structure. Make their wait time and drive time all inclusive.
1-3 years exp. $18.00 per hour. 3-6 years exp. $20.00 per hour. 6-10 years exp. $22.00 per hour. 10-15 years exp. $25.00 per hour. 15-25 years $28.00 per hour.
2) Cap the hours a driver works in a week to 50, across the board. If you pay them enough they will slow down. They will go to bed. They will have no need to push the envelope.
3) Teach people to be honest with themselves inside a truck. Teach people to make wise decisions in a truck. Teach drivers to be responsible.
4) Schedule Shippers & Receivers while drivers are on duty. That will create a sense of urgency for them. Wait time will be reduced.
'Study over. Saved tax payer dollars. End of all problems known to truckers'. As it is associated to Log books-E-logs.
This will also reduce driver turnover. If most are paid the same. They have no need to jump ship. Companies retain drivers. Its that simple.
Stop paying them dirt poor wages and running them like sled dogs. You will get rested, happy truckers.
Whether we work 70 hours or 50 hours home time is hard to accomplish. As a driver you will always get pinched. Being away from home is part of life as a trucker. But at least if they are paid accordingly they can justify being away.
ALL of this stuff in quotations, you don't need.
"The law stipulates that the agency use drivers from a range of applications and fleet sizes and gauge their fatigue levels using Psychomotor Vigilance Tests, actigraph watches and cameras and “other on-board monitoring systems that record or measure safety critical events and driver alertness,” according to the law’s text."
