When it comes to truck stops, there's still some very good family-owned old school establishments out there that are in dire need of our support.
While employed drivers like myself are often told where we need to fuel, that DOES NOT mean I need to give them any of my own money- well, except for tipping the shower attendants for doing a great job of keeping the showers clean.
Independent truck stops usually offer a safer place to park- BUT they can not stay in business if the truck parking area is full all while their stores, restaurants, fuel islands, and other 'profit centers' are almost completely empty.
I would like to encourage everyone to get to know these independent truck stops by going to Facebook and doing a search for a page known as "Support Better Independent Truck Stops". Join us as we collectively do what we can to help these places stay in business and give us more for our hard-earned money!

Used to park in an Independent in OK for stretch of time. The fuel island was always empty. 8 of them if I recall correctly. I found out one day when stopping to get fuel. The don't take any type of fuel cards. None. I almost ran out of fuel to the Flying J in Sawyer OK. That is the main reason I think they go out of business. They can't or won't sell fuel to a large segment of the trucking industry. You would think Comdata would be good any where.
